Malegaon blast accused and Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency's BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur on Friday said former Anti-Terrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare died in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks as she had cursed him for treating her “very badly” while she was in custody in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.

“Hemant Karkare falsely implicated me. He died of his karma. I told him, he will be destroyed. I told him his entire dynasty will be erased. Maine kaha tera [Karkare] sarvanash hoga,” she said.

The IPS Association tweeted in response to her comment, “Ashok Chakra awardee late Sri Hemant Karkare, IPS made the supreme sacrifice fighting terrorists. Those of us in uniform condemn the insulting statement made by a candidate and demand that sacrifices of all our martyrs be respected."

Karkare was killed along with two other senior police officers while fighting terrorists during the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai in November 2008.

Pragya Singh Thakur is set to have a direct electoral contest with Congress veteran and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh in Bhopal.

Again after November 2008 Mumbai attacks he has raised a controversy by saying that the end of Hemant Karkare, of the Anti-Terrorism Squad of Maharashtra, killed in the attacks, may be related to his investigation of the 2006 Malegaon blasts, leading to questions about the Mumbai attacks. Later he changed his stand and told Parliament he had not talked about who killed the police officers but about who "sent them in the wrong direction".[8] His party, Congress, distanced itself from his statements. The then US ambassador, in some the US embassy cables, accuse that this early dismissal, then followed by tacit promotion, indicates that "the Congress Party will readily stoop to the old caste/religious-based politics if it feels it is in its interest."

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a petition seeking a direction to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to deregister political parties that misuse religion, race, caste, community and language for electoral gain.

A Bench of Justices G.S. Sistani and Jyoti Singh said “no cause of action was made out in Delhi.”

BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay’s petition pointed out that at an election rally on May 13 in support of his party candidate in the Aravakurichi Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu, where bypoll is to be held on Sunday, Makkal Needhi Maiam president Kamal Haasan said, ‘The first terrorist post India's independence is a Hindu. His name is Nathuram Godse’.

The Bench asked Mr. Upadhyay why he did not approach the Madras High Court in whose jurisdiction the statement was made. It, however, allowed him to approach an appropriate forum if he chooses to.

Mr. Upadhyay claimed that Mr, Haasan made the statement “deliberately in the presence of a Muslim majority crowd for electoral gain, which is clearly a corrupt practice under Section 123(3) the Representation of the People Act 1951”.

He said that as per the Model Code of Conduct, no party or candidate could indulge in any activity that may aggravate the existing differences or create mutual hatred or cause tensions between different castes and communities, religious or linguistic.

“Hence, Mr. Haasan has violated the Model Code of Conduct in addition to Section 123(3) of the RPA 1951,” the plea stated.

“Mr. Haasan is deliberately promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and brotherhood, which is an offence under Section 153A of the IPC [Indian Penal Code],” it claimed.

Mr. Upadhyay asked the court to direct the ECI to refer the complaints relating to misuse of religion, race, caste, community and language by contesting candidates and political office-bearers to the respective investigatinG agencies.

He also sought a direction to the Central government to take appropriate steps to restrict the misuse of religion, race, caste, community and language by contesting candidates and political office-bearers for electoral gain.

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan approached the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail on Wednesday. This after the Karur police booked the actor for promoting enmity for stating that Nathuram Godse, the Hindu man who killed Mahatma Gandhi was Independent India’s first extremist.  

On Wednesday, the MNM chief approached the court seeking to quash the FIR, but was denied the same by Justice B Pugalendhi who stated that the court could not get involved at the current stage of events. The judge further advised that Kamal Haasan apply for anticipatory bail in view of the situation, which he has done. The hearing for this is expected to take place on Thursday.

A few days after the MNM chief made the controversial remark, a complaint was given against him by Hindu Munnani’s Karur district secretary, KV Ramakrishnan. An FIR was registered under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code.


Following the stir his statements created, the actor defended his views and stated that people were making allegations against him without listening to his entire speech at Aravakurichi.

"In Aravakurichi I said independent India's first extremist was a Hindu. It is a historical truth," he stated. He further added that all his family members were Hindus and that he would not speak in a manner which would hurt their beliefs.  He said truth will always be bitter and that bitterness will turn into medicine.

The actor-politician had received both extreme backlash and support following his statement.

Swaraj India National President Yogendra Yadav pointed out that Godse was Hindu and wondered what was wrong in Kamal’s statements. Echoing a similar remark was AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi who also argued that there was truth in what Kamal said. Others however, such as Tamil Nadu Minister for Milk and Dairy Development K.T. Rajenthra Bhalaji said the actor-politician's tongue should be cut for his remarks.

CHENNAI: Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan today said he was "not intimidated" by the backlash over his comment that Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse, "independent India's first extremist", was a Hindu. "Terrorists abound in all religions. Around history, you can list many people from many religions. I was talking in that term. I said every religion has their own terrorist. You cannot claim that we are sanctimonious," Kamal Haasan told NDTV, appearing to defend his remarks that even led to slippers being thrown at him and a police complaint against him.
"History shows you all religions have their extremists," he said.

Earlier this week, slippers were thrown at Kamal Haasan during his campaign in Madurai. A Tamil Nadu minister, KT Rajenthra Bhalaji, controversially said his tongue should be cut off.

Kamal Haasan, whose new party Makkal Needhi Mayyam is debuting in this national election, told NDTV: "I don't feel intimidated by slipper and stone hurling."

He sought to clarify that his comment was "about harmony" and he would reach out to the Muslim, Christian and Hindu communities.

The veteran actor made the comment on Sunday while campaigning for the by-election in the town of Aravakurichi in Tamil Nadu's Karur district.

"I am not saying this because this is a Muslim-dominated area, but I am saying this before a statue of Gandhi. Independent India's first extremist (theevravaadi) was a Hindu, his name is Nathuram Godse. There it starts," Kamal Haasan said on the man who killed Gandhi in 1948.


Speaking from the sunroof of a vehicle, Mr Haasan, 64, also said he is the Mahatma's "great-grandson in spirit" and that he came there to question the his assassination.

The BJP condemned the Makkal Needhi Maiam chief's remarks. "We strongly condemn Kamal Haasan for talking about Hindu extremism in his poll campaign. He is triggering communal violence in a place where there are a lot of minorities. The Election Commission must take stringent action against Kamal Haasan for this speech," Tamil Nadu BJP chief Tamilisai Soundararajan tweeted in Tamil.

A police complaint was also filed against the actor-politician on Tuesday over his comments. He requested the Madras High Court for protection from arrest. The court, however, has not set any date for the order.

Saying that he doesn't fear being arrested for his remark, the actor said "tension will increase" if he is arrested.

Meanwhile, the police in Coimbatore district denied permission to the actor on Friday to campaign for the Sulur by-election on May 19. "Denying me permission to campaign in Sulur is not justifiable. If the situation is not conducive, they should postpone the Sulur polls," he said.

COMMENT
The actor launched his party in February last year and fielded candidates in all 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu.

“It was my personal opinion remark. My intention was not to hurt anyone’s sentiments. If I’ve hurt anyone, I do apologise. What Gandhi Ji has done for the country cannot be forgotten. My statement has been twisted by the media,” Thakur, an accused in the Malegaon blast case, said.

Describing Godse as a “patriot”, Thakur had earlier said those calling him a “terrorist” will be given a befitting reply when the election results are announced. “Nathuram Godse was a deshbhakt (patriot), is a ‘deshbhakt’ and will remain a ‘deshbhakt’.

On the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha celebrated his death and the 'martyrdom' of Nathuram Godse, the man who killed Gandhi on January 30, 1948.

Hindu Mahasabha national secretary Puja Shakun Pandey shot at an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi on Wednesday, celebrating 'Martyr's Day' in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh.

After Pandey shot at the Gandhi, 'blood' was seen oozing out of the effigy.

According to reports, Pandey also distributed sweets among her supporters and fellow Mahasabha members.

Godse, who killed Gandhi, was allegedly associated with Akhil Bharat Hindumahasabha.

Akhil Bharat Hindumahasabha has always celebrated Gandhi's death anniversary as 'Shaurya Divas' or Martyr's Day, but they have never gone to the extent of shooting at an effigy of the Mahatma in celebration.

The fringe group of Shakun Pandey is not associated with the original Hindumahasabha.

On Wednesday, the nation observed the 71st death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind led the country in remembering the Father of the Nation.
